Why Bar Stock Is Different from Ordinary Inventory
For most components, total quantity is enough. For bar, tube, extrusion and other linear material, it can give a dangerously incomplete answer.
The total length can look right while the job is still short
Imagine that your ERP shows 5.20 metres of a material in stock. That sounds enough for a 1.50 metre requirement. But the total is made from three physical pieces: 3.00 m, 1.35 m and 0.85 m. Only one of them can supply the complete cut.
A conventional stock balance adds the lengths together. It does not understand that two short offcuts cannot be joined to make one longer component. This is the central bar stock problem: available length and usable length are not the same thing.
The same issue affects round bar, flat bar, square bar, tube, pipe, structural sections and extrusions whenever production consumes a defined cut length from a physical piece.

False availability

Define how each material behaves
Linear-stock settings live on the part record. A default kerf represents the material normally lost on every cut. A minimum retained-offcut length identifies remainders that are too short to return automatically to usable stock and should be reviewed for scrap.
If you recover scrap value, an optional scrap inventory part can receive the quantity when a piece is explicitly scrapped. These rules keep purchasing, production and stock records consistent.

Order pieces without losing the stock-unit value
Suppliers may quote by bar, metre or another stock unit. Fraction records the number of physical pieces and the length of each one, while allowing the purchase price to be calculated per piece or per stock unit.
That means the purchase order can describe what will arrive at goods inwards while the inventory value remains aligned with the supplier's pricing basis.

Receive and trace every bar separately
At goods receipt, Fraction creates an individual identity for each bar. The received length, remaining usable length, stock location and receipt reference stay with that piece. Several bars can share the same heat or cast number without being collapsed into one anonymous balance.
When a cut is consumed, the remaining offcut keeps the same piece identity. You retain the connection to the material received rather than creating an untraceable item on an offcut rack.
Reserve material the shop floor can use
Allocate complete cuts, not an abstract length
The BOM and works order use a cut length for a linear-stock component. Fraction checks the available length on each physical piece, includes the kerf for every cut and reserves only complete cuts that the selected bar can supply.
Automatic allocation considers remnants first and then chooses the smallest suitable piece. This helps consume usable offcuts before opening a full bar, without allocating a cut across two pieces. If circumstances change, an untouched allocation can be released and rebuilt from current stock.
Keep the rack and the ERP aligned
Count by measuring, not guessing
Linear-stock counts present each physical piece for measurement. Enter the actual remaining length for every bar or offcut, and Fraction records the adjustment against that piece and its location.
Open work-order reservations are protected: a piece cannot be reduced below the length already committed to active cuts. A zero measurement records a piece as physically absent or fully scrapped rather than silently leaving phantom stock available.
